Equality and diversity resources

Equality and Diversity UK have produced and collated various resources, information, publications and statistics to improve understanding of issues relating to equality and diversity. We have recently produced a CD for practitioners which contains PDF files, documents, quizzes and activities to use in colleges, schools and work based learning organisations. The resources on the CD also support other providers who work with diverse groups of people and individuals. The CD is available for purchase (£110.00 plus £1.75 postage and packaging). Age Discrimination legislation (PDF)

This Age Concern and Business link fact sheet explains how Age discrimination regulations will affect your organisation.  It answers questions such as: What is age discrimination? How to avoid age related harassment. How will it affect employee benefits, recruitment, retention, and retirement of both current and existing staff? What monitoring should be done, how and why?

Aimed at employers this fact sheet offers an informative overview of the regulations for any reader.

Case Scenario for Culture (Word Document)

Working in a culturally diverse community requires better understanding of our students, their needs, and their worries. Therefore, this fascinating training resource provides seven scenarios involving students with diverse cultural backgrounds. Each student is worrying his or her tutor. What should be done? The resource is ideal to use for teacher/tutor/educational manager training and can be used individually or, as recommended, in-group exercises supported by roles playing, and discussion. These are seven difficult situations, which eventually you will have to deal with. What would you do?

Considering Cultures and Custom (Word Document)

Although this is advice to employers, it will be of interest to anyone working within a culturally diverse community and who wants to increase their knowledge. Cultural considerations can be easily achieved and all within operational requirements. Simple changes can be made to everyone’s benefit, but only if the employer is aware of such needs and requirements.

Culture and Customs (Powerpoint Presentation)

This excellent PowerPoint answers the question of how to create a culture of respect within your organisation. Aimed at educational staff it discusses developing staff training and correct monitoring to raise awareness of differences in customs and culture. What is inclusivity and how does inclusive learning work? What can be done? What is acceptable? What to do if accused of being a racist? These are important questions.

Customs and Culture booklet (Word Document)

This colourful, illustrated resource booklet is designed to provide some general guidance on etiquette around customs and cultures as a guide for staff and managers working with diverse groups of people.  It discusses cultural awareness, benefits and legislation before introducing each of the major world religions.  Finally, the booklet offers tips to help improve monitoring, what do for visitors and finally suggestions about what you yourself can do? -  contains colour images.

EDIM’s Q&A

This user-friendly Learning & Skills Council Northampton fact sheet answers several questions about Equality Diversity and Impact Measures (EDIM’s). Such as what are EDIM’s? Where did they come from and how do they work? The fact sheet also explains the importance of EDIM’s and the consequences if they are not achieved.

Equality and Diversity A5 Booklet (PDF File)

This colourfully illustrated and professional workbook, published by Lincolnshire and Rutland LSC, titled, Equality and Diversity,  explains various aspects of cultural and equality issues including, ‘your right to fair treatment whatever your gender, faith/belief, race/ethnicity, disability, age or sexual orientation’. It discusses, stereotyping, explains the world religions, legislation, all within a fun and bright booklet. Also contains exercises, puzzles and even a certificate!

Stand Up For Us – Challenging Homophobia in Schools (PDF File)

What is homophobia? What is homophobic bullying? In addition, how does it affect people? This well presented joint DfES and DofH publication discusses the importance, and benefits, of tackling homophobia within schools. It includes quotes from students who have experienced such behaviour and it offers suggestions on how, and where, to start your school policy. The booklet also highlights current legislation and Ofsted obligations.

This important booklet is relevant to teachers, educational employees and anyone with an interest in current educational issues. 

Equality Legislation (Powerpoint Presentation)

There have been many recent changes to equality legislation and this highly interesting PowerPoint Presentation explains the various laws and how they impact upon society and your organisation.  This presentation is applicable to anyone with an interest in equality law, human resources professional, and organisation managers. Laws explained include, Gender Recognition Act 2004, Civil Partnership Act 2004, and Human Rights Act 1998.

Equality Legislation Quiz (Word Document)

10 questions to test your Equality Legislation knowledge. How is your knowledge? How is the knowledge of your staff? This user-friendly double-sided photocopiable quiz could be used with students/professionals of all levels. Most questions should be answered successfully after using the above PowerPoint. Could be used before or after a presentation or used to provoke group discussion or simply as an icebreaker.     

Gender Impact Assessment (PDF File)

Gender Impact Assessment, published by the Women and Equality Unit, DTI, examines the needs of men and women and argues the importance of ensuring that gender is considered by policy makers to correct any negative impact of one group over another. Furthermore it discusses inclusion and is packed with amazing gender and equality facts. The publication is aimed at anyone with an interest in gender equality and requires Adobe Reader to open.

Homophobia Bullying Factsheet (Word Document)

This fact sheet looks to clarify and define homophobia and homophobic bullying, as well as discussing the effects of such bullying on Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, and Transgender people. There is no excuse for such behaviour and this fact sheet suggests what schools can do to stop it. The fact sheet is aimed at educational professionals, in and out of both the classroom, and it could be adapted for classroom use. Islamic Food Factsheet (Word Document)

This interesting fact sheet explains the importance of correct procedure when offering food to Muslims. For example: what is and is not permitted, the importance of correct food preparation, storage and transportation of such food etc. The fact sheet clarifies and offers advice, which should be considered if organising a function to be attended by people of  Muslims faith. 

Planning Accessible Events (PDF File)

This important checklist highlights the must-do’s when organising events to ensure that they are fully accessible to all attendees. Do you have wheel chair access? Are your doors wide enough? It is not good enough to assume that things are good enough. There is important legislation to protect this right and to ensure that everyone can attend you function. 

Race in Schools (PDF File)

Race Equality in Education is an Ofsted report, which examines four key areas:  improving standards, race equality within the curriculum, dealing with race related incidents, and the benefits of building constructive links throughout the community.

Although the principle audience for this report will be education professionals, the report is written in an accessible, user-friendly style and can be read by anyone who is interested in current educational policies.

Published by Ofsted in November 2005. Ofsted is the government education regulator.
