The Equality and Diversity Network
The Network Aims:
The Equality and Diversity Network strives to be inclusive and open in its work, to challenge discrimination and to consult, involve and inform the individuals and the communities for which it works.
About the Network
The Equality and Diversity Network UK is an independent national network of organisations and individuals whose aim it is to promote equality
and diversity within institutions, companies and for individuals. The purpose is to develop the understanding, knowledge, skills and professionalism of groups
and individuals.
The structure of the network is unique in that it consists of communicating and educating around UK Equality issues.
The Equality and Diversity Network UK exists to promote a greater understanding of Equality and Diversity issues. Dissemination of information is valuable
and sharing individual and organisational experiences and knowledge across organisations is crucial to the success of the network.
Networking is a reciprocal process based on the exchange of skills, knowledge, views, values, ideas, resources, materials and advice.
These are important elements of the Equality and Diversity Network UK process of sharing protocols and pulling best practice together.
The network aims to create clarity and consistency around terminology, language and the understanding of concepts, legislation, regulations, customs and cultures.
It is the role of the Equality and Diversity Network UK to ensure that people interested in equality and diversity,
equality practitioners and others are seen as competent and professional in their approach to implementing equality as both individuals and professional practitioners.
Membership is open to all sectors: Public, Voluntary, Community, and Business. Membership is also open to students and to individuals with an interest in
equality and diversity for personal development.
Benefits of joining the Network
If we are to be successful in promoting equality and diversity, it is essential that practitioners and others have an independent forum where they can find support,
resources, materials, information and guidance to be able to meet and navigate the complex set of challenges faced within today’s society.
As individuals and
practitioners we deal with a range of issues including racism, sexism, homophobia, ageism, etc. and it is important to acknowledge that these challenges need to be
tackled sensitively and successfully. This also has to be balanced between dealing with local, regional and national perspectives and within the scope of the themes
of equality.
To achieve this, there has to be an environment where the spirit of collaboration, co-operation and confidentiality is in place.
Employers, parents, carers, training organisations and providers of services need to understand how to approach issues of inequality and how to make the relevant
changes to their work and day to day activities in order to be seen to be fair to all.
